Checking Your Child's Posture

Written By Marshall Family Chiropractic on July 10, 2018

Our modern, high-tech world has a big impact on your child’s posture — and their health. Smartphone usage affects posture, respiration, digestion, and many other aspects of normal, healthy body functioning.

In addition, slouching in front of a computer or video game on the television or wearing a heavy backpack can, over time, cause spinal wear and tear that will predispose your child for a variety of pain syndromes down the line.

That’s why it’s so important to check your child’s posture on a regular basis to make sure the curve of their spine is maintaining a natural, healthy “S” curve.

Ways to Help Your Child Maintain Good Posture

The first thing you can do is set a limit to “screen time,” that is, time spent on smartphones and other tech devices.

Not only does screen time contribute to poor posture, but it also takes away from other, more healthy activities such as playing outdoors and engaging in sports.

If your child does use a video screen, make sure the screen is at an appropriate height so they are not moving their neck into a far-forward or far-backward position. Supplement this with a chair that has proper ergonomics to keep the rest of the spine in alignment.

Also, if your child wears a backpack for school or other activities, be sure it’s the correct size for their height and weight. A too-heavy backpack can cause shifts in the shape of the spine, leading to aches and pains down the line.

A backpack should not exceed 10% of your child’s bodyweight. That means if your child weighs 70 pounds, he should not carry a backpack heavier than seven pounds.
