Signs that Tell You Need a Pinched Nerve Treatment

Written By Marshall Family Chiropractic on March 15, 2019

A pinched nerve is not something you want to ignore. In the short run, it causes pain and discomfort. In the long run, not getting the proper pinched nerve treatment could damage the nerve, perhaps irreparably.

Fortunately, chiropractic care is a pain-free and non-invasive way to relieve the pressure on the nerve (that causes it to be “pinched”), restoring full sensation and relieving pain.

5 Signs of a Pinched Nerve

Pinched nerves can happen almost anywhere in the body, but the most common areas include the neck, the shoulders, wrists, low back, and legs (sciatica). The following signs may indicate you have a pinched nerve:

1. Tingling

A common, odd feeling with a pinched nerve is tingling or “pins and needles.” This tingling may come and go, and move around a little bit, but if it is due to a pinched nerve, it will stay in the same general area.

2. Numbness

Numbness is a feeling (or more accurately, a non-feeling) of lost sensation. You may not be able to feel things as strongly – textures may not be as easy to distinguish, for example.

3. “Falling Asleep” Feelings

Everyone has had that feeling of the legs “falling asleep” if you sit on them the wrong way. With a pinched nerve, you may have this feeling in the affected area more often than not.

4. Pain

Pain is a common result of a pinched nerve. Whether it is a shooting pain, burning, or a dull ache, this pain can be constant or suddenly wake you up in the middle of the night.

5. Muscle Weakness

Muscles can feel a little weak or “off” with a pinched nerve.

Important note: A pinched nerve can mimic signs of peripheral neuropathy, which is a more serious neurological condition is commonly caused by diabetes, as well as other physical stressors, including autoimmune disorders and toxins. The above symptoms can also indicate a more serious disease such as ALS or MS.

This is why you should always seek professional evaluation when you have pinched nerve symptoms. We will, of course, refer you to an appropriate specialist if we feel you may need in-depth neurological testing.
