Are You Getting Enough Vitamin D?

Written By Marshall Family Chiropractic on July 29, 2021

Vitamin DApproximately 20 million Americans are deficient in vitamin D, according to the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. A large chunk of those people are the eldery and hospitalized individuals. And many studies, including this one, found a correlation between a vitamin D deficiency and ending up getting hospitalized due to COVID-19.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient, meaning you have to replenish it on a daily basis because your body doesn’t store or produce it on its own. At Marshall Family Chiropractic in Saint Clair, we want to help you understand that vitamin D is critical for strong bones, heart health and immune function, and how chiropractic care can help your body properly absorb it.

The Role Chiropractic Care Plays in Vitamin D Absorption

Getting enough vitamin D involves a lot more than standing out in the sun long enough without getting skin cancer or a sunburn. Lighter skin tones are more efficient at converting sunlight to vitamin D than darker tones, and younger people are more efficient than older, making it easy to become deficient with age.

Signs of vitamin D deficiency include fatigue, muscle cramps, joint pain, and bone loss. To help prevent this, you want to make an effort to get adequate sunlight on a regular basis. How much that is required varies from person to person. You can also get vitamin D from fatty fish, various mushrooms, eggs, and whole food supplements. There’s also beef liver and cod liver oil, two not-so-tasty options.

Vitamin D helps your body build strong bones by aiding in calcium absorption. Poor calcium absorption often leads to buildup in the arteries, which is why vitamin D is important for heart health as well. This nutrient also plays a role in immune function by helping your body more efficiently fight off pathogens and keep inflammation levels down.

Quality chiropractic care comes into play with vitamin D by helping your body more efficiently absorb it. If nerve function is hindered due to a misalignment in the spine, connected bodily functions become impeded, including nutrient absorption. Chiropractic care can help the nerves connected to your skin so your skin cells so when sunlight hits a certain protein in your skin, it can convert the protein into vitamin D.
