Written By Marshall Family Chiropractic on November 11, 2019

holiday nutrition cookiesThe holiday season is filled with gathering and parties where – let’s face it – the food is not the healthiest. From family gatherings to office parties, the buffet tables are usually lined with comforting, fattening food, all to end with an array of sugary treats that all look tempting.

If you are on a diet or have decided to eat healthier as a lifestyle choice, how can you enjoy the parties and treats without gaining weight or depleting your body of good nutrients?

Here, you will learn 3 tips and tricks to keeping your holiday season nutrition in check and healthy.

Holiday Season Nutrition Tips and Tricks

Opt for Healthy Recipes

The invention of the vast internet makes it easy to hunt for healthy recipes for twists on classic holiday favorites. Also, substituting certain ingredients for healthier ones can make a huge difference in the healthiness of your recipes.

For instance, if a recipe calls for butter, substituting coconut oil or ghee in place is a wonderful option to get healthy fats into your diet. Also, try substituting white flour for whole wheat flour, as it contains more vitamins, minerals, and fiber than white flour.

Plan for Parties and Gatherings

If you have party plans marked on your calendar, plan to eat healthy food up until you attend the party. Eating a balanced diet before a party will help you make wise decisions at the party and help justify your decision to indulge in that decorated Christmas cookie.

Limit Portion Sizes

One common side effect after eating holiday food is sluggishness. In order to combat sluggishness, try limiting your portion sizes. Your body won’t suffer if you have a small spoonful of stuffing or a small piece of cake – but you will feel sluggish if you serve yourself large portions or eat multiple desserts. Eat slowly, savor the flavors, and leave that last piece of cake for someone else.
