Common Exercises and Outdoor Activities to Increase Your Core Strength

Written By Marshall Family Chiropractic on September 10, 2018

Core strength is always in the news, with many health articles urging people to “strengthen their core” for long-term benefits.

But what exactly is your core?

Contrary to popular belief, your core is not just your abdominal muscles. It consists of an entire group of muscles located in your hips, pelvis, abdomen, and lower back.

These muscles contribute to balance, stability, and strength for better performance and stamina and, as you age, better ability to continue to perform the daily activities you love.

Ways to Exercise Your Core

Now that you know what your core is, you can concentrate on adding some fun, simple core exercises into your fitness routine to keep your core strong.

Let’s look at some examples:

Planks

A plank exercise is one of the best ways to build core strength and, depending on the one you choose, it can also tone your upper body and whittle your waistline.

Hula-hooping

Core-ing doesn’t have to be boring.

Get yourself a weighted hula-hoop and give it a spin to increase fitness and tone that middle. One study showed women who hooped reduced waist size and increased muscle tone in their torsos.

Rollerblading

Like any sport that forces you to maintain your balance, rollerblading can have a real impact on core strength as you finesse your way along the pavement.

Trampolining

A trampoline is not just a good cardio workout — it also helps tone those core muscles. Since your entire body flexes, then releases, as you jump on the trampoline, it can exercise your entire core from hips to abs.

Core Exercises for Fitness and Pain Prevention

Finding a core exercise that you love will help you maintain an active lifestyle and prevent pain-related disability. In fact, studies show that core exercises can be pivotal to the reduction of lower back pain and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries.
