Experienced a Concussion Recently? Chiropractic Can Help

Written By Marshall Family Chiropractic on December 21, 2018

Let’s talk about winter concussion treatment!

Here in Michigan, we love our winter sports. There is nothing like a fresh snowfall that covers the evergreen trees in a thick blanket of white powdery fluff. It’s during this time that we crack open our sheds to pull out our sleds and snow skis, and strap on our ice skates to take on the frozen lake or a hockey rink.

Unfortunately, all of that slippery ice and snow can lead to falls, which, if we land on our head, could potentially result in a concussion.

Other sports activities have a risk of concussion, too, including basketball, wrestling, and even golf (ever been hit on the head with a golf club?). But snow and ice lead to treacherous conditions that can cause a slip and fall, even while just walking out to get the mail.

What Is a Concussion?

A concussion occurs when the head and brain get knocked around in such a way that the brain gets shaken and potentially bruised. Blood vessels can break, and nerves can be damaged. Concussions are typically not life-threatening, but the first thing you should do after a head injury is go to the emergency room. There, they will perform a CT scan to ensure that there is no skull fracture or internal bleeding.

Concussions can cause you to feel sleepy. You may have difficulty remembering things, and you could have some bouts of dizziness or feel “out of it.”

More serious side effects such as seizures or loss of consciousness need to be treated immediately in an ER.

Chiropractic Care: An Excellent Concussion Treatment

Chiropractic care is terrific for concussion treatment, pain relief, and sports injury treatment. Neck injury is often common with a head concussion, so the chiropractor may treat your neck to release tight muscles that may be in spasm after the accident.

A holistic treatment from your chiropractor may also include nutritional support, gentle therapeutic exercise, and other support for your body.

Remember to take a break from any winter sports until your concussion has healed!
